Spying on teens and prunes.
Thursday’s show brought up some interesting things for me. Rachael brought in a viewer who wanted to know how much spying on her kid was enough, while her daughter was all “Mom thinks she knows, but only knows maybe half of what’s really going on.”
Now, I have teenagers, and this show just reinforced what I already knew - I picked a great place to raise my kids. Not only do we have a trust that I don’t see in parents elsewhere - and seeing their kids, it’s not hard to see why they’re freaking out.
I know, I know, every parent says that, right? But really - I don’t see the need in my house for the Private detectives, and the snoop stick that allows the parent to remotely monitor everything a child does online. And I mean everything - emails, IM, keystrokes, everything. Nor do I need a spray for the liquor cabinet so that I can scan for fingerprints. I don’t even have a liquor cabinet - I keep my stuff right out in the open! The best of the gadgets was the car keeper, which will store a month worth of locations, and how fast the teenager is driving. With a son ready to take his permit test? That one I might consider.
Nah.
I don’t know. Sure, my kids might be lying to me, but I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt first. A lot of folks fear the teenage years - but you know? I find myself having more fun with my kids than ever. Hopefully that’ll keep me in tune with them and what they need until they finally decide they’ve had enough of ole mom and move out.
At least as long as I promise not to hide prunes and beans in their brownies!
