Bobby Flay and SYTYCC!

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

11_12_topper.jpg

Hey guys, sorry I’m a little late getting these up! My house has been attacked by a vicious round of stomach flu that’s been cavorting through the schools and I fell victim to it Monday night after nursing my kids through it all weekend long. But I’m feeling much better today, so let the recapping commence - we’ll get all caught up by the end of the day!

Monday’s show was dominated by round two of So You Think You Can Cook! But before we get to that, I have to address the outfit - while I love the concept in general, I was completely distracted by the brighter swatch of the zigzag pattern just under the black on Rachael’s dress. The necklace was overkill too - and ugh. Yeah, not my favorite dress - she’s had some real winners this season - this one isn’t it! However - those boots? AWESOME!

But, back to SYTYCC! After a recap of last weeks challenge, Rachael welcomed the four remaining contestants to the stage for a quick challenge - peel and chop potatoes for 90 seconds - all skin gone, and cut into 8 wedges and thrown in the bowl. The winner with the most weight in the bowl, gets a big advantage for the second part of the challenge.

Ben takes the slow and steady route, Iron Chuck is quick and both boys have the first potatoes on the scale. The girls are slower, and there’s peels flying all over the place. Along with the peels? There is blood too - three out of four cut themselves! Martika is complaining because she doesn’t have a peeler at home, and isn’t used to using one! The winner is Ben with 1 pound on the money!

The next part of the challenge is a bottom of the jar/box recipe segment. The advantage for Ben is that he gets to choose his ingredient first, and assign the others. They will have 20 minutes to make 1 portion, and plate something that highlights their bottom of the jar/box ingredient. Ben chooses molasses, then gives Jen the Apple-O’s, Martika gets the pickles because she’s ‘a spicy girl!’ and Iron Chuck gets the mayo.

The judge? Iron Chef Bobby Flay! He’ll be looking for presentation, spice, and the ingredient being the forefront of the dish. So you think you can cook? They have 20 minutes to… Prove it!

While they are working away, Bobby is the first ‘buddy of the week’ to give Thanksgiving tips! It gets off to a great start with Rachael holding his new cookbook upside down and Bobby correcting her - lots of laughter. Bobby shows us his no miss Roasted Turkey recipe! Words to live by: I know it’s a lot of butter, but it’s Thanksgiving! Forget about it!

And don’t forget to go to the site and check out the web exclusive - Bobby’s worst holiday cooking disasters and then, brush up on Bobby’s carving technique before your big day!

Back to the prep kitchen where the SYTYCC guys and gals are cooking up a storm! Rachael checks in to see what they’re making. Martika makes a chicken Cuban sandwich, Jen went with a cereal crusted chicken cutlets with peanut butter sauce and grilled apples. Ben went for a broiled chicken glazed with molasses with a green salad, and last but not least, Iron Chuck went a simple seared salmon with couscous and an herb mayonnaise - I can tell he’s in trouble right away, as his presentation is more what you’d see on a family table, compartmentalized and, well, boring.

Bobby joins them to do the tasting, and Rachael heads back to her kitchen to make what’s for dinner: Turkey Cutlets Milanese-Style with Pumpkin Polenta.

Rachael, who was nervous last week about letting one go, this week is clearly enjoying the elimination process - complete with creepy lighting! The verdict:

Jen: daring, and the flavors were nice with heat and sweet - the chicken was overcooked, and the apples under cooked. She’s in the bottom two.

Martica: liked the use of the pickle juice, presentation was lacking a bit, but the flavor was there, and she was declared the winner of the challenge!

Ben: presentation was restaurant worthy, however it wasn’t as creative as it could have been, but had good flavor too.

Iron Chuck: was very nice, and applause for not using chicken like everyone else. He could have done more with the mayo, and spent too much time on the couscous and salad, and the salmon was undercooked. As a result, Chuck is eliminated from the competition!

This week on Rachael Ray!

Monday
So You Think You Can Cook?! Round 2

It’s down to four contestants in our “So You Think You Can Cook?!” showdown, and we’ve got two surprise challenges designed to push them to their boiling point! Their fate rests in the hands of celebrity judge Bobby Flay, who’s kicking off the “Friends of Rach Thanksgiving Countdown” with his tips for the ultimate turkey.

Tuesday
Paula Deen

Our “Friends of Rach Thanksgiving Countdown” continues with superstar chef Paula Deen, who’s whipping up two simple yet show-stopping holiday desserts. Then, it’s our “human lab” experiment when three women looking to shed a few pounds test out the latest exercise machines on the market. And for dinner, don’t miss Rach’s healthy and versatile Thanksgiving soup!

Wednesday
Food Network’s Nigella Lawson

We’re going inside Food Network star Nigella Lawson’s kitchen, and the beautiful chef has you covered this Thanksgiving with her favorite dishes. Then, a game of “Celebrity Face-Off” will leave you guessing which sexy star of one of TV’s new hits is coming by! Plus, a quick and easy centerpiece for your holiday table.

Thursday
John Stamos

ER’s hot doctor John Stamos takes you inside his home, and then our buddy Valerie Bertinelli shares her tips for making anywhere feel like home! Plus, the countdown to the most anticipated meal of the year continues with the Food Network’s Guy Fieri’s sure-fire stuffing recipe.

Friday
Teri Hatcher Is Back!

Not only is Teri Hatcher taking over Rachael’s kitchen, but her daughter Emerson is helping with their favorite family recipes! Then, multi-Grammy winner Seal is performing his newest hit, and Lara Spencer comes by with this week’s serving of “The Dish.”

Dishing doggies!

11_9_topper.jpg

Today’s dish had a whole bunch of Lara’s favorite things!

Things mentioned:
Tory Burch Reva Flats - flexible and super comfortable, “ever star carries these” as great travel shoes. She even brought them in too- small sizes so that Rachael and Lara didn’t fight over them back stage. Hah. Also shown, the luggage tags and travel wallet. And the boots - the boots are GENIUS - super hot and sexy!

Vincent Longo Concealer - two things in one, the oil based concealer for fine lines, and the illuminating other end for dark spots around the eyes.

Ever wanted to be Vanna White? Here’s your chance with The Shoe Wheel - fun and functional all at once. 20 slots for 30 pairs of shoes, spinning at your fingertips.

Benefit Long-Lasting Eye Shadow - lasts for hours, and hours without getting those annoying creases partway through the day. All hail the sexy eye!

Anlo Jeans were named the must-have jean for fall. There’s stretch, but not too much that you get baggy-butt, and you can wear them more then once without getting too loose and in need of a wash n dry shrink!

Rachael loved her Simpsonized mug she showed off during the seasons first dish, but said it wasn’t quite her because the hands weren’t in the air - we all know she can’t talk without moving her hands! They sent her another, re-simpsonized, and now it’s perfect. Simpsonize yourself today!

Then the very “Ugly” Vanessa Williams showed her fabulously beautiful self, joining Rachael at the kitchen table to talk about Ugly Betty, the wedding, and what it was like to have Posh play her bridesmaid. After assuring us that Victoria Beckham was wonderful, and didn’t mind poking fun at herself in the name of comedy, she then talked about the real reason she was on the show - Home Again Pet Microchipping.

When she lost her dog Enzo earlier this year, it was the fact they’d microchipped him that eventually saw him returned to New York - from Connecticut! It’s a simple, harmless procedure that could help return a beloved animal to it’s rightful home. On the show, Rachael and John got Isaboo injected with her own microchip as well - something that was far more traumatic for Rachael then her dog!

What’s for dinner? Rachael helped a viewer who adopted four kids from three different countries serve up some multicultural goodness that the kids were sure to enjoy. Supper-sized Egg Rolls and Easy Cheesy Enchiladas.

Everyone’s favorite Dancing Doc!

11_8_topper.jpg

I know this is a day late - but I’ve been running puke patrol for the kids over here - and no, my visiting Suxters, it’s not what you’d naturally think; just a touch of elementary school tummy flu. (grin) I am pleased to see you think there is hope for me, though, even if you’re being nice to me just to keep me on my toes…

Thursday’s show was a wild one, with one of my favorite Grey’s Anatomy stars, Sara Ramirez! She’s so funny, and cute, and I love a girl who’s not afraid to step out of the size 2 box the rest of the TV world strives for - Sara isn’t afraid to admit that she loves food. She does promise us that there are going to be cat fights everywhere on the set as the season continues (if the season continues, of course. Darn writer’s strike!) - possibly between her Callie and Bailey. (After last night’s episode, it looks like that’s certainly come to a head - will Callie fight to get the job she hates back or…?)

In her real life, though, she much prefers to talk it out, rather then rumble. I’m sure all her (too) tiny costars are grateful! Can’t get of Sara Ramirez? Get the online exclusive backstage bits here!

Things just get more wild as buddy Jarod Miller brings a new ‘freak out Rachael’ segment called Pick your Poison! He sets Rachael at ease with several cute cats, with purring and soft fur and cute baby faces, and then brings out the game - choose the poisonous critter out of the two shown! Rachael screams and runs away, of course, as he says “whoops, this lid is open!” I can’t blame her - my biggest phobia is reptiles too. I’da been SO OUTA THERE. She was game though, and played along. As she said “I don’t know why I love you, Jarod, but I do…”

What’s for dinner? Spinach-Artichoke Hummus & Cheesy Toast and Wild Cacciatore.

Mysteries of the… bottom of your purse!

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

First off – lets go to the WRR Mailbag! What, you didn’t know I had one? Sure, it’s the ‘contact’ button over there, or the ‘comment’ button at the end of every entry.

Constance wrote:

Hi Rachel,
Your show the other day with Robin McGraw The mixture she uses for cleansing her liver she takes at bedtime. Can you help with the mixture she drinks? Great show!
sincerely Constance

To clarify – I am not Rachael. Don’t worry, you’re not the first to think so, nor the last, and I appreciate the comparisons! *g* This is a site written by a fan (That’d be me, Lessa) for 451 Press. I don’t have any access to Rachael or her team – however! I did know right where to go on her official site to find what you were looking for – so here ya go.

Robin McGraw’s home remedy for detoxifying the liver is two tablespoons of olive oil, a dash of cayenne pepper, and the juice of half a lemon. Add it to a cup of hot water, and drink it before bed.

11_7_topper.jpg

Today we had another big mystery taster – right after seeing Mom’s Olive Spread. The crowd went wild to see the Taster, eyes were big and the screams were very loud – did you see it? If not, can you guess before Rachael?

Here are her questions:
1. What would be on the coffee table – Cosmo or Maxim: Neither! Every Day with Rachael Ray!
2. How many packs of candles (packs of 12) would you need for your cake? 2 and a scosh!
3. If I was gonna see the latest work – Movie Theater, Record Store, TV: Movie Theater.

Then it was time to take a break and talk about germs on your PURSE. We followed Liza, a self-professed germaphobe, as she goes through her day. It had never occurred to her that she could be brining the germs directly to her kids on her purse! Rachael hijacked her purse, and sent it to the lab, where Carol the Scientist pointed out that we tend to set our bags on the floors everywhere, and in the shopping cart and on the ground and whatnot. She also said it was the worst purse she’d EVER tested. They swabbed Liza’s purse, and let them grow for a week so we all could be grossed out!

Some of the things found on the purse was E. Coli, Staph, yeast, and other things. So – all you germophobes wiping down everything in sight? Don’t forget the bottom of your purse! Better yet, go get one of those purse hanger things from Luxe Link and keep your bag off the floor!

To the kitchen for Ceasar’s Deviled Eggs! Then more questions for our Mystery Taster! Figured it out yet? This will surely give it away…
1. Perfume or Cologne? Perfume.
2. So, as an actress, what kind of professions you’ve played: This will give it away… a Teacher, a Boxer… Yes! It’s Hilary Swank!

She said she almost said she’d been a boy before, but Rachael assures her that she’d have gotten that too. She doesn’t even bother with the cards because she is a huge fan and could talk to Hillary forever. They talked about her new short hair, which Oprah cut on a recent show for Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths, that makes wigs for women going through Chemotherapy.

They also talked a bit about her new movie, PS. I love you, that will be out in December. Hillary promises that we’ll laugh through our tears…

Then, it’s back to the kitchen for Dinner: Turkey Meatloaf with Creamy Asiago Gravy, Roasted Broccoli & Tomatoes.

Fast, faster, fastest!

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

11_6_topper.jpg

Rachael wasted no time hitting the kitchen today, giving us another peek at some of her new recipes from the new book, Just in Time. Today’s fair is Pork Chop Saltimbocca, three ways - Fast - Stuffed Jumbo Pork Chop Saltimbocca with Seared Kale, Faster Pork Tenderloin Saltimbocca with wilted Spinach and fastest, Saltimbocca Panini with Fresh Baby Arugula Salad. We got the Fast one start to finish, and the promise of the other’s at the end of the show

Robin McGraw, wife of the infamous Dr. Phil, joined Rachael again with some more beauty secrets and talk about her 31-year marriage to Dr. Phil - apparently he’s a giant sap. There were rose petals, 31 long stemmed roses, 31 chocolate covered strawberries, 31 chocolate kisses, 31 gift certificates for 31 flavors ice cream. The last gift was “a ring of 31 carets” - a ring of baby carrots on a plate. Hah!

McGraw has no problem with the fact that she’s almost 54 - she loves it. She wants everyone to embrace the aging process, and do it gracefully and in a healthy way. Her latest secret is the slim wrap. They warp you up in bandages soaked with minerals that are supposed to pull the toxins and impurities out of the system, then you jump on a trampoline to increase circulation. Robin says she lost 11 inches total her first time, and the viewer, Lisa says she felt fantastic afterwards - and lost 25.5 total inches from her chest to her legs.

Another Robin tip? Ground Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory. Sprinkle it everyday on vegetables or salad, and after a week you’ll notice no joint pain or sore muscles.

Then, our Justin Kredible came back to crash a high school reunion, as a couple of viewers confessed their worries and fears about attending. While they’re worried about what will happen when they’re recognized, Justin WANTS people to recognize him - since he didn’t attend the school at all, despite the evidence of photoshopped pictures in the slide show! He got everyone to think he was part of the class - just so they didn’t have to admit they didn’t remember him!

The two viewers, Zaina and Joe, discovered that the extra pounds, and Joe remained nervous, but had a good time in the end. Of course, it helped that he married one of the class hotties! Justin got up and confesses to the rouse, to the laughter of the whole room.

Tomorrow - a new Mystery Taster!

So you think you can cook?

Monday, November 5th, 2007

11_5_topper.jpg

Every Monday in November is set aside for the So You Think You Can Cook challenge! Each week the five finalists will participate in challenges until there’s only one cook standing – that winner will get a write up in Every Day with Rachael Ray, plus be able to tape a cooking segment, where Rachael is only the assistant, and they get to boss her around! Whoo!

Today was the first day of the contest, and we got to see some of the ones who DIDN’T make it, then hopped right into getting introduced to the finalists!

First up, from Lewisville Texas, is Ben, a 30 year old writer and massage therapist. What caught their eye? Not only his cooking, but his unusual pets – Chickens! He says they were poor when he grew up and came from humble beginnings.

Jenn, a 25 year old student and bartender Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, has been in the kitchen from a young age and through Girl Scouts. She likes to make things creatively – her combo of a lasagna Sammie got her noticed!

From Laguna Niguel, California, we meet Chun-Mae, a jewelry designer is a miracle worker with leftovers, a skill also learned from humble family beginnings – she hopes doing this competition helps people in her life believe in her.

Chuck, a 36 year old marketing copywriter from Seattle Restaurant grabbed attention with his nickname ‘Iron Chuck’ and his Iron Chuck Sundays where he has a party and they give him an ingredient and he makes 3 courses out of it – he just loves learning, and teaching his kids the ins and outs and joys of cooking.

And from Los Angeles, Martica, an actress and voice over artist loves sexy Latin food, and her joy of putting it all together in new ways that pay homage to her heritage. She can’t wait to teach Rachael the things she knows!

They all pile into a limo upon arrival at New York, where they’re welcomed at the hotel with a message from Rachael and an invitation to a special dinner – and the cheers when Rachael joins them to say hello! Rachael welcomes them to New York and gives them some good advice – be themselves, and remember that food is fun. Colby Donaldson, everyone’s favorite survivor - is going to handle the first challenge, and bits them to enjoy their dinner, and get a good nights sleep because the competition begins in earnest the nest day!

Back in the studio, they bring in the finalists, then cut to the tape of the first challenge. It begins at Walmart, where they size up their competitors. The first challenge? The Ultimate Tail Gate fair! They have a $60 budget, and only 10 minutes to get their ingredients, and then head over to Rutgers University to cook for one hour, for 10 people. With what will surely be a phrase that grates on my nerves in no time “So you think you can cook? Well Prove It!” the contestants are off and running, telling us their choices on the fly, and flinging produce willy nilly. There are collisions, and rapid-fire decisions, and over budget adjustments, and last minute races for more bread! Chaos of the best kind!

Most of them went for standard tailgating fair – two made chilli, two made burgers, and one (Chun-Mae) went for a taco salid, and a rice krispie treat. Everyone finished in time, though it was close! The reviews from the tailgaters were pretty positive, and everyone got to go to the game afterwards.

When it came to elimination time – Rachael made us wait till the end of the show – and thus I will make you wait until the end of this post!

In the meantime, Julianne Moore joined Rachael at the table, then in the kitchen to cook up tonight’s dinner – Pretzel-Crusted Chicken & Zucchini strips with cheddar-spicy Mustard Dipping Sauce! Could Julianne Moore BE any skinner? Holy Cow! They talked about her new children’s book, Freckleface Stawberry, which she wrote using her own childhood growing up with red hair and freckles. Click here for a chance to win a copy!

Back to the contestants for So You Think You Can Cook! Rachael has decided she doesn’t like this part, but does go through and tell everyone the results. Ben was declared the winner of the challenge – giving his entire meal rave reviews. Joining him at the table (where there’s sammies and beer) next was Jen, who’s chili was almost too hot to eat, but still fantastic, then Martica, with her Latin take is declared still in it to win it as well.

The last two, Chuck and Chun-Mae had to wait until after the last commercial break, where Chun-Mae is sent home as the first eliminated contestant. Tune in next Monday for the next challenge, and tomorrow for more Rachael Ray!

This week on Rachael Ray!

Carpooling, with a dash of traveling Dish!

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

11_02_topper.jpg

We jumped right into the Dish with Lara Spencer today, as we do every Friday! Today’s theme? Travel gadgets to make your life easier and more fun! First on the list is the Clear Registered Traveler Card - with this, for your $100 you become a member of a network that is pre-screened and approved by the TSA. It holds your information, fingerprints and iris images encrypted on it, and more and more airports are adjusting and upgrading to accept the card - JFK is a big one! It allows you to skip the long security line, and glide right on through. As Lara says “Big Brother is Watching!” You still have to go through security x-ray, but you get to skip the whole line.

Also on the list - an Inflight Power Recharger - plug it into the audio source and it will charge your phone, blackberrys, iPods, etc. It’s FCC-certified and can be used anytime! For $35 it’s a great stocking stuffer! Miss the days of BoomBoxes since the invention of iPods? Now you can get an ImainGo portable speaker system - it’s a mini boombox for your iPod for $40! (Enter to win one here!). Last but not least, Rachael’s addition to the Dish? Cup Couture - stylish sleeves to wrap your coffee cup in on the go!

Next up, Cutie-pie Jerry O’Connell from Carpoolers gives Rachael a spin in a little hybrid car, over to the kitchen table. He admits to having failed his first driver’s test, and that his wife, Rebecca Romijn is the speed demon and he doesn’t like to let her drive. He did, however, sing at the wedding. Of course, it was a ploy to get Vanessa Williams to snatch the microphone away, safe the crowd from his voice, and finish the song that he was too nervous to ask her beforehand to sing. Awwwwww. So now he bows down and thanks her every time he sees her.

Then, our buddy Gretta gives Kimberly, a recently divorced and now dating again viewer update her underwear to help her feel sexy and confident again, as well as showing us some sexy styles to compliment our body type.

And last but not least - a dinner that just may kick the recipe of the year off its pedestal: Chili Dog Chili with Spicy Mustard Cornbread!

The ultimate Uptown Girl - Christie Brinkley!

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

11_01_topper.jpg

Who can believe that Christie Brinkley, international star and top model is 53? I’d be happy to look that way in a bikini NOW, let alone when I’m in my fifties! She’s looking fabulous, and every bit the girl next door even after all these years.

They joked about family and shared stories, and discovered that Christie’s 12 year old son got in trouble passing notes in school - notes that said “What’s your favorite cooking show? Mine’s Rachael Ray!” How could Jack be any cuter?!

You can’t have a covergirl on the show without discovering their beauty secrets, of course, and Christie had a wealth of those to share - from de-puffing your eyes, to bronzing up and sun-in for your roots, she shares all her secrets and her favorite products too.

What’s up next for Christie? She’ll be unveiling the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree top ornament with the Starlight Starbright Children’s foundation this month.

Also, on this episode, we got a sneak peek at Rachael’s new cookbook, Just in Time, which is available next Tuesday. Hot off the presses, Rachael is especially pleased with the concept of 15 minute meals, 30 minute meals and even 60 minute slow down and enjoy meals. Christie Brinkley’s son Jack? Gets one of the very first copies, of course!

Naturally, right at the top of the show, Rachael showed one of the new recipes from the book, cutting it down from 15 minutes to just 7.5, just to show that it could be done before commercial! Sliced Steak Stroganoff in French Bread with Dill-Relish Dressed Salad had our mouths watering as we watched, and my kids put that on the MUST TRY SOON list of recipes we keep on the fridge. Later in the show, Christie joined Rachael to cook up some Buffalo Baked Chicken with Blue Cheese, Celery and Carrot Slaw.

Yum-o!

Happy Halloween, Rachael Ray Fans!

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

10_31_topper.jpg

Sure, it was yesterday, but as I as busy toting kids around and seeing if we could achieve a sugar coma by bedtime, I’m not posting this recap of yesterday’s show until, well, today! So hang on to your hats, we’re going to revisit Rachael’s spookiest show of the year!

We started right away with Rachael and hubby John looking adorable as Pan Am employees as a pilot and flight attendant. They headed right to the kitchen to start in on some Halloween treats for any party. Batwings and Deviled Eyeballs. Rachael heads to the pantry, chatting, and a spider drops down and scares her to death - the first of many pranks throughout the show. John was a good hubby though, and went over to ‘kill’ it, and retrieve her molasses for her ‘Bat Wings’.

After a snack plate is made for John, he heads off to wait for the end of the show while the first trick or treater shows up at the kitchen door - he removes his mask, and it’s none other then Cameron Matthison from Dancing with the Starts and All My Children! They talked about dressing up - and how he tends to be the prop to his wife’s sexy outfits - he wears all the clothes, she wears as little as possible, which is not a bad thing for him! He also discovered this year that apparently the costumes are not all about him, and he followed the whim, and desired star wars theme decreed by his four year old. Welcome to my world, Cameron! The inside scoop on Dancing with the Stars? Mel B is the biggest cutup on the show and is a lot funnier then we’d think!

Justin Kredible was on hand to give us a behind the scenes tour of the haunted Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, which is one of the top haunted houses in the country - watching him scream like a little girl was HYSTERICAL and should not be missed!

Evette was on hand for some creepy crafts for the house, and then what’s for dinner? Dracula’s Transylvanian Ghoul-ash!

Hope your Halloween was spook and chocolate filled, just like mine!
